Description
What it is
The Supple Preparation Facial Toner is the product most people think of first when they hear the name Klairs. It is a watery, slightly slippery toner meant to be the first leave-on step after cleansing. Rather than stripping or tightening the skin like older astringent toners, it is designed to put water and soothing ingredients back in, so that the serums and creams that follow have a softer, better hydrated surface to sit on.
The formula is alcohol-free and contains no added synthetic fragrance, but it does include a small blend of essential oils, which gives it a light herbal scent. Klairs also makes an Unscented version of the same toner for people who prefer to avoid essential oils entirely. The standard bottle holds 180 ml, and a 30 ml travel size is also sold.
Key ingredients
- Sodium hyaluronate: a salt form of hyaluronic acid that holds water in the upper layers of the skin for a plumper, more supple feel.
- Beta-glucan: a humectant and soothing ingredient that the brand highlights for deep moisture.
- Polyquaternium-51 (Lipidure): a film-forming moisturizing agent that helps reduce water loss after application.
- Centella asiatica extract: a classic K-beauty botanical used to calm the look of redness and irritation.
- Licorice root extract: a soothing extract often included for its calming and tone-evening reputation.
- Panthenol: provitamin B5, a humectant that supports a comfortable, less tight skin feel.

How to use
- Cleanse your face and pat it mostly dry.
- Pour a few drops into your palms, or onto a cotton pad if you prefer.
- Press the toner into your face with your palms, or swipe gently with the pad, avoiding the eyes and lips.
- Repeat on drier areas if your skin still feels thirsty.
- Let it settle for a few seconds, then move on to serum and moisturizer.
Tip: patting with warm hands instead of using a pad wastes less product and tends to feel more hydrating, especially in a Canadian winter when indoor heating dries the skin out.
Who it suits
This toner is a sensible pick for people who want a simple hydrating step that will not sting, tighten or leave a film. It is often recommended to beginners because it slots into almost any routine and pairs easily with actives used later. If you are just building a routine, our Korean skincare routine for beginners explains where a toner like this fits. Dry, dehydrated and combination skin types tend to like it most, and oily skin can use it as a light hydration layer under a gel cream.
Who should be careful
Although the formula is alcohol-free and free of added synthetic fragrance, the essential oils it contains (such as lemon peel, orange peel, lavender and ylang-ylang) can bother very reactive skin or people with known fragrance allergies. If that is you, the Unscented version is the more cautious choice. It also contains plant extracts like licorice, aloe and centella, so anyone allergic to specific botanicals should read the label.
Patch test first. Apply a small amount to the inner forearm or behind the ear and wait 24 to 48 hours before using it on the face.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Klairs Supple Preparation toner fragrance-free?
Not completely. It has no added synthetic fragrance, but it contains essential oils that give it a light natural scent. Klairs sells a separate Unscented version for people who want to avoid them.
Is this toner exfoliating?
No. It contains no AHA, BHA or PHA. It is a hydrating and soothing toner, so it can be used twice a day alongside a separate exfoliant if you use one.
Can it be used on acne-prone skin?
Many people with breakout-prone skin use it because the texture is light and it does not leave a heavy layer. As with any product, watch how your skin reacts over the first couple of weeks.
Can I layer it with the Klairs vitamin C serum?
Yes. Apply the toner first, let it settle, then follow with a serum such as the Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin Drop.
