Description
What it is
The Time Revolution The First Treatment Essence is Missha’s best-known skincare product and one of the most popular fermented essences in Korean beauty. The current 5X version (sold in some markets as The First Essence 5X) is a watery, almost toner-like liquid applied after cleansing and toning. Missha says the formula is built mostly from a yeast ferment produced with its Extreme Ferment process, and positions it as a lighter, more affordable way into the ferment-essence category.
The brand describes it as targeting several concerns at once, including hydration, tone, texture, clarity and the look of hyperpigmentation. The ingredient list is short, with niacinamide and ceramide NP added to the ferments. It comes in a 150 ml bottle and is meant to be used twice a day.
Key ingredients
- Yeast ferment extract: the main active in the formula, which Missha says makes up most of the essence; ferments like this are used for a smoother, more radiant-looking complexion.
- Bifida ferment lysate: a probiotic-derived ferment often included to support a healthy-looking, resilient skin surface.
- Niacinamide: vitamin B3, used for the look of uneven tone, dullness and enlarged pores.
- Ceramide NP: a skin-identical lipid that supports the moisture barrier.
- Glycerin and sodium PCA: humectants that draw water into the skin.
- Adenosine: an ingredient commonly used in Korean skincare for the look of fine lines.

How to use
- Cleanse your face and apply toner if you use one.
- Pour a small amount of essence into your palms.
- Press and pat it into the face until absorbed, or apply with a soaked cotton pad.
- Add another layer if your skin feels dehydrated.
- Follow with serum, moisturizer and, in the morning, sunscreen.
Tip: patting the essence in with your hands is the most common method in Korean routines and tends to use less product than a cotton pad.
Who it suits
This essence suits almost anyone who wants an extra lightweight hydration layer with a little added tone and texture support. It is especially popular with people who have normal, combination or oily skin and dislike heavy creams, since it hydrates without leaving residue. Dry skin can use it as a base layer under a richer moisturizer. If you are new to multi-step routines, our Korean skincare routine for beginners shows where an essence goes.
Who should be careful
The short, fragrance-free formula is generally considered easy to tolerate, but fermented ingredients do not agree with everyone, and some people report breakouts with yeast ferments. If you have a known sensitivity to ferments or to niacinamide, introduce it slowly. Very dry skin will still need a moisturizer on top, because an essence alone is not enough to seal in water.
Patch test first. Apply a small amount to the inner forearm or behind the ear and wait 24 to 48 hours before using it on the face.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Missha First Treatment Essence a dupe for SK-II Facial Treatment Essence?
It is often compared with SK-II because both are watery fermented essences. They use different ferments and are not the same formula, so results and feel can differ.
What is the difference between the 5X and older versions?
Missha has updated the formula several times. The 5X version uses its Extreme Ferment yeast ferment with niacinamide and ceramide NP, and earlier versions had different ingredient lists.
Can I use it with vitamin C or retinol?
Yes. Apply the essence first, then your treatment serum. Its simple formula makes it easy to pair with most actives.
Is it a toner or an essence?
It is an essence, but the texture is as thin as a toner. Many people use it straight after cleansing in place of a toner.
